These volunteers, also known as Active Mobility Councillors, engage with their communities, improving the awareness and acceptance of active mobility while collecting and highlighting the day-to-day issues that active mobility users face. In doing so, they not only directly encourage people to cycle and walk to access work and public transport but, with their knowledge, help local authorities make more effective decisions to improve adoption.

About CFAM

CFAM is the brainchild of Bengaluru's Bicycle Mayor, Sathya Sankaran, who felt the need to accelerate the transformation of Bengaluru into a healthy, futuristic, and climate friendly city.

With more than 12 years of work in enabling sustainable transport - across state, market & society - Sathya has brought together a crack team of change-makers to blaze a trail for other Indian cities in sustainable commute.

CFAM consists of ward-level Active Mobility Councillors, NGOs, RWAs and other volunteers who will drive campaigns to transform the city.

In March of 2020 the application for the Active Mobility Councillor program was launched by Dy. CM Shri Ashwathnarayan. Post the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic, a first set of 30 Active Mobility Councillors were inducted by Smt V Manjula ACS, GoK and Commissioner, Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT). She has built a culture of promoting sustainable mobility in Planning in DULT. It is one of the few such organizations in India which plans infrastructure for the state.

She also launched the Council for Active Mobility which includes the Active Mobility Councillors, NGOs, RWAs and other volunteers who drive campaigns to transform the city.

"The active mobility councillors have an important role to play at the community/ neighbourhood level in building healthy communities. Walking and cycling are healthy modes for short urban commute, and active engagement of the councillors in auditing the pedestrian infrastructure and in highlighting issues and concerns of pedestrians and cyclists will help the relevant agencies to design and build complete, continuous, connected and safe footpaths and cycle tracks. DULT would be extremely happy to work together with all councillors to create a walkable, cyclable and healthy city. My best wishes to this initiative, and compliments to all concerned."

Manjula V, IAS, Commissioner, Directorate of Urban Land Transport
